Bridewell Gallery

Throughout the artists' tenure of the Bridewell, the gallery space has been an integral part of the studios working life. The majority of Bridewell members have a social dimension to their practice as educators, workshops facilitators and links with community groups. The gallery has often hosted the workshops, performances and exhibitions derived from this engaged form of practice

After a break of almost 10 years and an influx of new members it was decided to move the Gallery to a more accessible part of the building and seek funding. From 2006 to 2009 this was secured to refurbish the space and employ two successive gallery coordinators. The remit of the gallery widened to provide affordable exhibition space for emerging contemporary artists and makers, many of whom engaged with the local community.

Since the autumn of 2009 resident artists of Bridewell Studios formed a committee in order to voluntarily run the gallery and ensure that the successful and popular events and programmes could continue. The commitete also decided to offer the use of the gallery for resident artists wishing to develop their gallery practice.
